Due to restrictions brought on by the pandemic, this year’s auditions will be conducted via video submission.
In this our 30th year of music-making, the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra continues its tradition of providing an environment of performance excellence, friendship and fun. Our creative and administrative staff have been working hard to reimagine our program, maintaining our tradition of music-making while adhering to all public health guidelines and restrictions. So whether you’re trying out for the Concert Winds, Symphonic Winds or the Wind Orchestra, we will continue to find unique and meaningful ways to engage all our musicians!
If you’ve never done an audition before, relax! Virtually all musicians who try out receive membership into our family of ensembles. The auditions are held to give us a chance to get to know you, to help determine which ensemble suits you best and to help us establish seating arrangements (i.e. 1st flute, 2nd clarinet, etc.).

- Click on the drop down menu to the right of this screen under “Audition Excerpts” to download material for your instrument.
- Musicians auditioning for the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra must select and prepare any two (2) of the enclosed excerpts.
- Musicians auditioning for the TYWO Symphonic Winds are asked to prepare any one (1) of the enclosed excerpts.
- Musicians auditioning for the TYWO Concert Winds are asked to prepare a solo of your choosing as well as various major scales.
- All musicians are encouraged to carefully observe the different styles and metronome markings where indicated.
- You will also be required to select a solo or etude of your own choice, not to exceed two minutes in length.

Before you begin recording, make sure you are in a space that is well-lit and free of interruptions or distractions. Be sure that all your music and instrument is ready for your use. The adjudicators need to be able to see not only your face but also your hands so be sure to place your music stand accordingly so that there are no visual obstructions. Your video should not exceed three minutes in total length.
- Start your recording device. From this point, you may not stop the recording until you have finished performing all your selections.
- Begin by stating your name and the grade you’ll be entering in September, 2020.
- List the titles of the all the selections you plan to perform.
- Perform all your selections without pausing the video recorder.
- When you are finished with your audition performance, please announce that you have reached the end of the submission, restate your name.
